Centre of Visual Art – Panel: Gender and Indonesian Contemporary Art

Wednesday 28 November, 12–1pm

Join artists Elia Nurvista, Nuraini Juliastuti and art historian Wulan Dirgantoro for a dialogue on gender and contemporary practice in Indonesian art. Introduced by Dr Danny Butt.

Areas of discussion will include how the Reformasi of 1998 has shaped the formats of women’s practices within contemporary art, in relation to other historical frameworks. We will open with representation in artists initiatives, the art management sector, and how women’s issues leak into the artworks. We will move beyond representation to talk about how everyday patriarchy structures the local art scene and lastly discuss the different strategies (practiced or imagined) used to make room for conceptualising women’s issues in contemporary Indonesian art.

Hosted by the Centre of Visual Art, VCA and Buxton Contemporary.

For one special day, The Makers & Shakers Conference will offer interactive Q&A panel discussions with successful makers, branding, retail and social media gurus, and maker-movement academics that will offer usable insights and tools that will help you create, sustain and scale your creative business.

The conference will be held at Deakin Edge at Federation Square in Melbourne, and we’ve curated experts and inspiring speakers including Marcus Westbury, Emily Green, Tiff Manuell, Laura Blythman, Maryanne Moodie, Kylie Lewis, Kate Berry, Kirbee Lawler, Madeleine Dore, Kelly Thompson, Sina Klug, Professor Susan Luckman and Dr Kath WIlson.

On offer to attendees too is seriously yummy food and drinks (all included with the ticket!), and we’ll create the optimal conditions for learning, knowledge exchange, community building, and fun.

Come and mingle with other like-minded creatives and invest in the future of your creative business (and yourself)!

Mid-week Walk and Talk – Louise Saxton: The Linen Project

Join us for a curator-led tour of The Linen Project. Hear directly from the artist and gain a deeper understanding of the artworks and the exhibition.

Free, but bookings are essential.

About the exhibition
Louise Saxton: The Linen Project is an immersive installation which pays homage to past lives and past labour and is built largely from the remnants of Louise Saxton’s practice of reclaiming everyday needlework.

The artist has been collecting domestic linens since 1988 and for more than a decade has extracted and reconstructed the embroidery and lace from those linens to build several major bodies of work.

From these discarded and disinherited materials, Saxton creates unique two and three-dimensional assemblages.

The Linen Project celebrates the materiality of linen and investigates its role in caring for family and community. The project is being undertaken with the support of an 18-month artist in residence program through St Vincent’s Hospital at Caritas Christi in Kew.

Featuring: Louise Saxton.

A sinking feeling (the politics of risk)

Opening night Thursday 11th October, 6pm.

A sinking feeling (the politics of risk) will explore the relationship between both the artist and curator’s dependence on funding bodies and how that affects the likelihood of creating work that takes risks or offers critiques. The exhibition will engage with the potential ‘freedom’ that is a by-product of working freelance within the arts in Australia.

A sinking feeling (the politics of risk) intends to consider such questions as:

How in the current political/artistic climate can artists feel supported to take risks?

How are gallery spaces/artists/curators held accountable for speaking to, and with, diverse communities and engaging in meaningful cross-cultural dialogues?

This exhibition speaks to a sense of political disillusionment held by those who do not feel represented or supported within Australian arts communities. This is due to contributing factors such as a rapid rise of nationalism and a right-leaning, self-serving government. In relation to the 2018 exhibition, ‘Anatomy of Political Melancholy’, curator Katerina Gregos describes this kind of disillusionment as “…a sinking feeling borne from frustration, anger, despair, mistrust, sadness and hopelessness.”

Through their diverse practices each artist will consider themes of social responsibility while engaging with socio-political diversity and risk-taking. The artists demonstrate responsiveness through critical practices and dialogues, while resisting hegemonic interpretations of whichever communities they associate themselves within or outside of.

Blak Dot Gallery, as a not-for-profit contemporary art space, offers a crucial place to examine the social/political implications or expectations embedded within it. It is a potential sovereign space where a critique of power, funding structures and the vulnerability that artists experience, as a result of an unstable and unsupportive arts economy, can be discussed.
